Member Profiles

Dr Charlotte Vye
Volcanologist
UK YES Network National Representative and member of the Professional Development Support working group

Hi! I am a volcanologist, based in Edinburgh, working on volcanism and magmatism in the East African Rift, USA and Iceland. I studied at Keele University, then completed my PhD at the Open University. I have worked for BGS since 2000.

I joined the YES network in 2009 and became the UK YES Network national representative to extend the network to the UK. I am also working on the Professional Development Support team to liaise between industry, academia and professional societies in order to identify career development, research and study opportunities for early career geoscientists.

Joanna Brayson
Sedimentary Geologist
BGS YES Network Organisational Representative

Hi, I have been working as a Sedimentary Geologist for the BGS since 2005 – I am involved in geological mapping of mainly Cretaceous strata,  3D modelling (particularly in the London Basin) and geoscience communication (such as the OneGeology Kids pages www.onegeology.org/extra/kids). I graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2004 and I am now studying for an MSc with the Open University.  I joined the YES Network as a way of communicating with my peers in other organisations and also to pass on information to younger geoscientists as I progress in my career.

University of Glasgow

Dr Kate Dobson
Post-Doctoral Researcher
Research interests: Tectonics, Landscape evolution, Thermochronology

I am a geologist working on all aspects of the interaction between tectonics, landscape and climate.  I specialise in low temperature thermochronology, using (U-Th)/He and fission track analyses to constrain the burial and exhumation of rocks through the shallow crust in response to tectonic, magmatic and surface processes.  This research also allows me to work in the fieds of structural geology, accessory mineral geochemistry, and deveop new techniques.  I studied at Durham University, then worked for four months as a volunteer for the USGS at the Hawaii Volcano Observatory.  I completed my PhD at the University of Glasgow, and have been a post-doctoral fellow there since 2007.  I am editor of Ontrack, the online newsletter of the thermochronology community, am secretary of the Volcanic and Magmatic Studies Group (VMSG), and have run major international conferences.
I joined the YES network in 2010 and hope to use my experience with VMSG and my existing research networks to build new, interesting, and exciting collaborations through YES.

Equinox Minerals

Dr. Ryan D. Long
Exploration Geologist

I got my undergraduate degree from Cardiff University in 2007, following this I undertook an MSc at Camborne School of mines in 2008. On completion of my MSc I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to move to Australia and work on the Mount Isa copper deposit for my PhD which I completed in late 2010. Since then I have been working in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as an exploration geologist. I love the outdoor lifestyle provided minerals exploration and the excitement of working in the largely unexplored terrain of Saudi Arabia. I work on a range of gold and base metal projects within the Arabian Shield of Saudi Arabia.
I have joined the YES Network to keep ties to the academic world and to share experiences and ideas with other young geologists.

University of Leeds

Joanne Venus

PhD Student: Fluvial Research Group, University of Leeds
YES Network President 2010-2012

Hello, I am in the final year of my PhD at the University of Leeds looking at Permo-Triassic Fluvial succession in Utah. I am a past post graduate representative for the British Sedimentological Research Group and past Chair of the UK Young Geoscientists Group.

I joined YES in 2008 and served as a vice president in the run up to the 2009 YESCongress in Beijing.  I have been YES President since 2010 and hope to help the network to develop over the next few years. I would encourage all members to get involved, to drop into Skype sessions, and join the online webinars. There is a lot happening!
