EGU 2011 town hall flyer

The YES Network and the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) will be hosting a townhall meeting at the 2011 European Geosciences Union General Assembly in Vienna, Austria from 19:00-20:00 on April 5. This event will aim to address some of the key factors in aligning graduate aspirations with employer needs. There will be a panel of speakers including representatives from geoscience early-career networks, geoscience employers, recent geoscience graduates, and current geoscience students. The discussion will be drawing on experience and knowledge gleaned from the 2010-2011 responses to the YES Network Decision Points Survey. The meeting will identify aspirations and employment requirements as well aims to improve graduate-industry communication.

The townhall meeting will be a live web-cast. Web-based participation is being provided for free by the American Geological Institute (AGI). IUGS IGC YES Network Early Career Geoscientists Essay Contest

IUGS-IGC-YES Network: Early Career Geoscientists Essay Contest: The Future of the Geological Sciences
Submission Deadline: 7 March

The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) is organizing and sponsoring a global geoscience essay contest for early career geoscientists to voice their outlook on the future of the geosciences. IUGS invites all early career geoscientists, under 35 years of age, to submit an essay on their view of the Future of the Geological Sciences.

The winning essay will be published as the lead article in Episodes magazine, the global publication of IUGS which is distributed in 150 countries. The winner will also receive free registration to the next International Geological Congress (IGC) to be held in Brisbane, Australia in August 2012. The winner will be acknowledged formally with a Medal to be presented at the IUGS awards ceremony during IGC Australia. For more information, download the contest flyer.

The abstract submission deadline for Goldschmidt 2011 is 15th April.
The conference is 14th-19th August 2011 in Prague, Czech Republic.

2. Member profiles: We will be posting profiles of UK YES Network members on the blog on the Members page. Want to have your profile posted? Send us an email with a photo of yourself, a brief description about your research or occupation, and let us know why you joined the YES Network and/or what YES activities you're involved in.
